Ilios House is a perfect choice for a couple looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in an extremely well equipped, 2 storey house which overlooks a sparkling pool. It is situated on a quiet, secluded, private development of 8 similar, small, houses on the edge of the village of Kokkino Chorio where there is a well stocked small shop for your everyday needs as well as a couple of tavernas. The wonderful pool is kept in pristine condition and is shared by all of the 8 houses. The owner of Ilios House has provided 4 distinctively coloured sunbeds for the exclusive use of guests staying at Ilios House. 2 will be left for you on the ground floor terrace or on the private path leading to the pool whilst 2 further sunbeds will be found on the upstairs balcony from where you can enjoy glorious sea views across Souda Bay.
As well as the shop and tavernas in the local village of Kokkino Chorio, for more choice, the lively village of Plaka is only 25 minutes walk or 3 minutes drive; here you will find another couple of mini markets, a bar or two and a few tavernas all of which are good. The lovely sandy beach resort of Almyrida with its excellent tavernas, bars and food shops is a little further (35 mins walk or 5 mins drive).
Ilios House is one of 4 houses on the "top" terrace, overlooking the pool. Simply stroll down the path and you are by the pool which is surrounded by paved areas for sun bathing. All the houses have a small colourful garden in front of them; steps lead down from the pool terrace to another garden area with a central patio (and the other 4 houses in the total of 8).
Ilios house has several outside areas for relaxing, either in the sun or the shade, all furnished with tables and chairs. The large, sunny balcony leading off the 1st floor bedroom has views across Souda Bay which is a perfect spot if you want to sunbathe away from the pool area.
Inside the house, the ground floor living area has been extensively refurbished over the last couple of years to provide a well planned and equipped kitchen corner and a comfortable living/dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped (see amenities list) to enable you to rustle up delightful meals using the fresh local produce. There is a circular indoor dining table and two dining chairs as well as a comfy 2 seater sofa and 2 lounging chairs. For entertainment there is a Smart TV with many popular TV channels supplied via an Amazon Fire Stick, a DVD player, an Ipod docking station, a mini hifi /CD unit and a selection of books, cd's and dvd's.
There is also a modern fully tiled shower room with an enclosed shower cabin containing both fixed rain and hand held spray showers, wash basin, wc and a large bathroom cabinet.
French doors open up to the secluded and part covered, ground floor terrace which is furnished with a comfy, wicker/rattan 2 seater sofa as well as a large marble topped table and 4 wicker/rattan dining chairs. This is an ideal spot for al fresco dining or relaxing in the shade.
On the other side of the house you can enjoy breakfast on a sunny, south facing, patio with shade provided by a stylish, canvas covered pergola.
The air-conditioned bedroom on the first floor has a double antique style, brass bed with an EMMA mattress which was shipped out from the UK. You will also find plenty of hanging and clothes storage space in the wardrobes and drawers, a full length mirror, large wall mirror and shelf, a hairdryer and a mini safe. French doors open out to the large, sunny, balcony furnished with sunbeds and a teak table and chairs. From here there are fabulous sea views across Souda Bay to the Akrotiri peninsula. This balcony is perfect for sunbathing during the day and also for evening drinks whilst watching the sun set to the west.

We've had a very relaxing 2 weeks at Ilios House. The pool was wonderful at the of a hot day sightseeing. The house is well equipped so we enjoyed a few evenings eating in. The wine shop in Arida recommends some lovely local wines. Highlights included The Samaria Gorge, Almyrida beach which was relatively quiet and with a warm sea, Chania, Rethymnon, Knossos and the Heraklion Archaelogical museum - July 2019.
Fabulous time at Ilios House; as one previous comment said it should be called "Idyllic House" ! Lovely house with everything you need. Great villages nearby, wonderful people, great food and amazing views don't want to leave and can't wait to return. Thanks - June 2019.
We had a great holiday staying in Ilios House - September 2018.
Perfect house which had everything we needed. Fabulous restaurants within walking distance. Shan't recommend as half the fun is discovering for yourselves. We explored from Chania to Elounda and everything in between. We shall be back to stay in Ilios House - June 2018.
We had a really good time and were most impressed with the accommodation, pool & grounds. It's on our list for a return visit - June 2018.
Ilios house should really be called "Idyllic House". After the dust and grime of a few days in Athens, we arrived in a haven of peace and tranquility. Just what we needed. The garden is wonderful. It was great sitting there watching the sun go down. The house had everything possible to make our stay comfortable and all the outdoor seating areas are great along with the lovely pool to cool off and relax. Our first visit to this area. It's so beautiful with wonderful sea views and friendly people. Thanks for making it possible - May 2018.
We would like to say that we had a wonderful time at Ilios House and would definitely recommend you to all our friends and family. The house was lovely as was the location. Very comfortable and well equipped and perfect for complete relaxation. Thanks - October 2017.
Another lovely stay in Ilios House. We have been to all of our favourite tavernas and beaches - can't wait to return - September 2017.
One of the best places we've ever been to! Crete is amazing. The villa is very well equipped and we've had everything we needed. Make sure to travel around, some great places to see. Highly recommend "Lotties water sports" and meals in Almyrida - July 2017.
We just wanted to let you know that Ilios House is absolutely amazing and we are having a wonderful time on the island. Thanks for a wonderful holiday - July 2017.
We have had a lovely week. The house is one of the best equipped we have ever stayed in anywhere! Also a special thanks to Jan and the level of communication before we arrived. The driving directions were excellent. We've sent several days on the lovely beach at Almyrida; the beds at Cost Anita are good value if you eat there also. We had a couple of trips into Chania and also ventured as far as Knossos. We are sorry to leave but real life is beckoning now - September 2016.
We've had a very enjoyable stay in peace and tranquility as promised. Lovely house, pool a joy to swim in and lounge by. The village provided us with most of our needs. The local shop was open on Sundays and the local taverna was welcoming. Fabulous sunset views and meal at The Retreat taverna - September 2016.
Thank you for a lovely stay in Ilios House. We have thoroughly enjoyed our week. The house is lovely and in a perfect location with everything you could possibly need. The bed is comfy too! - July 2016
We love all the changes and improvements you've made to the house since we were last here - June 2016.
A lovely relaxing stay. So quiet! Wonderful house and great location. We've enjoyed lovely meals out, especially at Cost Anita at this end of Almyrida beach, it was really great for interesting Cretan food. We hope to return. Thank you - August 2015.
Fabulous holiday! A wonderful villa and pool with beautiful surrounding countryside. We managed the holiday on foot and found plenty of things to do and see within walking distance. The Retreat Taverna was our stand out place to eat with stunning views, we would recommend getting a taxi there but this is easy to do. The Italian in Plaka is also fantastic. We absolutely love the island and will definitely be back - July 2015.
Thank you for a lovely stay. We have stayed in a few other villas on this trip but Ilios House is by far the best, so well equipped - you have thought of everything! We are hoping to come back with family members and your (Crete Escapes) villas will be top of our list! - July 2015.
Lovely house, great view and island. Feel very relaxed and not wanting to leave. We will be back ! - August 2014.
Our first holiday in Crete has been excellent; made all the better by Ilios House and gardens. Beautiful weather has meant that we have been able to take advantage of the welcoming pool and the lovely local beaches. We enjoyed a great lunch in the buzzing atmosphere of Chania harbour and had good evening meals in the local tavernas. Overall a great first impression of both the island and the house. We shall be back! - June 2014.
Just to say we had a wonderful holiday at Ilios House. The house was perfect and we really didn't want to come back! We hope to stay with you again next year, all being well - May 2014.
Another perfect stay and we are particularly impressed with the pristine pool! - August 2013.
Well, here we are back in the wet and windy UK. We think this visit to Crete was our 9th, and one of the most enjoyable. It was definitely the hottest we have experienced. Ilios house was perfect for us. Everything looked clean and new (well, we knew the towels definitely were)! I am sure we will want to stay again. We especially appreciated the bed, and upstairs balcony, which, being in half sun and half shade was perfect for us - September 2012.
Another lovely holiday in Ilios House. We really enjoy the peace and quiet and the house is so comfortable. We were thinking of changing the locks and staying but Alan said that you were coming out. It will have to be another visit next year!! - August 2012.
Our 12th or 13th visit!! Had a wonderful 5 weeks here; relaxing in this peaceful place is just great. We will hopefully be back next year in what seems like our 2nd home after all these years. Thanks - August 2012.
Our 10th visit!! We've grown to love this beautiful island and seen even more spectacular scenery this year. As always we appreciate the comfort and delightful surroundings of Ilios House. The new trellis fence is great, it makes the outside "dining room" extra attractive. Thanks again - May 2012.
Spent a fantastic week here in Crete. Lovely weather, very relaxing. Try Elpis taverna in Plaka for fantastic food - October 2011.
We have had a wonderful week in this lovely house and such a beautiful setting!! We are now off to the south coast and just hope it's as good. Many thanks - August 2011.
Hello Janet, It is a month since our return and I am just getting around to doing the reviews. We loved Ilios House. We had the pool to ourselves mainly and thought you had given a lot of care to furnishings and gadgets eg iron, DVD player. We felt lucky to have found such a great place. We enjoyed the sun, sea and relaxation and will tell our friends about your house. Best bed for miles around!! - June 2011.
Another super holiday in Crete (our 10th). House and weather superb. Wish we'd had longer than a week - August 2010.
The house is excellent with a comfortable bed and everything here that you need. The views are magnificnet and we loved all the plants and birds that surrounded us. A totally relaxing holiday - June 2010.
Once again many many thanks for the wonderful 2 weeks holiday we have just spent at Ilios House. The new bed was fantastic!! We certainly hope to book the same two weeks again next year if possible. We never tire of Crete and love the Greek people and Ilios is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Thank you again - May 2010.
We will definitely consider staying at Ilios House again. It was a really lovely place to stay and in an excellent location. I shall be recommending it to my dad too as he also loves Crete and I think its a perfect location for him too. I was pleased to see Almyrida hadn't changed too much since I was last there 20 years ago (admittedly based on the memory of an 11 year old) - April 2010.
Our first trip to Crete and we're so glad we came here. A lovely house, well looked after with everything you need, the books and dvd's are a great idea. Recommend a trip to Elafonissi and if you're feeling fit, Samaria Gorge. Travel agencies in Almyrida or Kalives can help you out with transport/trips if you need it. All in all, a fantastic week - September 2008.
2nd visit to Crete, much prefer this area to the eastern side. The house was ideal for us, so peaceful and relaxing and a good base for visits to Chania, Rethymnon and Georgioupolis. It was excellent having the TV as we were able to keep up with the Olympics. great pool and weather - August 2008.
We have been holidaying in Greece for 30 years but to have now found Ilios House is the icing on the cake, it is so peaceful here and the views at any time of the day are wonderful. Thank you for sharing your house with us, we will be back - June 2008.
Villa superbly equipped and in a great location. We have been holidaying on Akrotiri for 14 years but this location is so much better. Plaka is a great village and we recommend taverna Harokopos. Chania is a must - best on market day. We will be back - May 2008.
We had such a lovely time this year in Ilios House that we wanted to inquire if it is free for next year (2008) - August 2007.
I have just taken time to relook at the photos on the web just to remind us of where we were this time yesterday. We both had a lovely time at Ilios House and all the notes and directions were spot on, we can’t thank you enough - it was the best week’s break for a very long time, see you next year - June 2007.
My family has recently returned from our summer holiday. I simply want to tell you how wonderful your Ilios apartment is. Astonishing views, immaculate rooms and a great pool. Also, your detailed directions were greatly appreciated. Thanks for all of your assistance - Ilios House - July 2006.
Hi - sorry it’s taken a few days to get back to you and to say many thanks for your gorgeously quaint house that we used. We loved it. We also loved the wake up call every morning (well we were on holiday) at 10ish from the sheep and the shepherd nattering to each other at the well. Even spoke to him on our last day, but never understood him. Its definitely one little spot to remember for another time. Once again many thanks Ilios House May 2006.
Lovely house and peaceful location, we came to relax and had no trouble doing that. Our 7th visit to Crete and this area is as beautiful as any we've visited before - Ilios House - September 2005.
Crete is the most southerly Greek island with an agreeable climate. The tourist season usually starts around April and lasts until the end of October. The spring (April) is a good time to visit for hiking and to see the beautiful flowers.
In early summer (May and June) the temperatures will be climbing steadily to an average in the mid 20's. This is a good time to visit if you don't have to keep to school holiday dates as the climate is very pleasant and there are few crowds.
July and August are the busiest (and hottest) months with tourists from all over Europe choosing Crete for their holiday destination. The north westerly winds usually moderate the temperatures but it's best to make sure your holiday accommodation offers shelter from the hot sun. It goes without saying that the sea will be warm.
September is still high season with warm, sunny days and the sea is still warm. The season draws to a close in October but this is a perfect month for visiting the island as the sea is still warm for swimming and activities such as hiking and visiting the archaeological sites can be undertaken in pleasant temperatures.
