The Samaria Gorge

Situated in the beautiful National Park of Samaria, West of Crete, this is one of the most commonly known attractions on the island and visited by thousands of tourists each year. Read more....

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake in the whole of Crete and is set in a beautiful landscape, lying in a valley among the hills, only 3 kms inland from Georgioupolis.  It is relatively small, with a maximum length of 1,087 m and a maximum breadth of 880 m. It covers an area of 579,000 sq. m. and is generally shallow, 22.5 m at its deepest point, while it lies approximately 20 m above sea level.  If you visit on a grey day, the landscape is reminiscent of a mountain lake in the Alps rather than being in Crete. Ancient Sites in West Crete

Crete, with layer upon layer of civilization, accordingly there are many ancient sites all over the island to visit. You will not find many Minoan remains in West Crete, at the most a few walls here and there (for example in Kanevaro St. in Chania where you can see the excavations of four Minoan villas).  Roman and Hellenistic ruins are more widespread but few excavations have been conducted, meaning that most ancient sites do not offer much to see to the visitor.
