Summer Holidays in Crete 2022: Latest Travel Guidelines

Posted on Thursday 7th April 2022 by

If you’re planning a summer holiday to Crete but remain unsure about travel restrictions read on to learn more about the current guidelines for those travelling from the UK.

Can I Travel to Crete from the UK?

Yes! Better yet, you are no longer required to fill out a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) to enter Greece or any of the Greek islands, including Crete.

This change in policy came into effect from March 15, 2022. And, as of March 18, all restrictions on arrivals from the UK were lifted, regardless of vaccination status.

Entry Requirements

Precise ‘covid’ rules are always subject to change, but Crete and its many islands have in fact been welcoming passengers from the United Kingdom since July 2020.

According to the official UK government website, any passenger over the age of 5 years old can enter Greece by presenting just ONE of the following:

  • a valid vaccination certificate.
  • a certificate of recovery from Covid.
  • proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of your arrival in Greece.
  • proof of a negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test taken within 24 hours of your arrival in Greece.

Please note however that random testing may still be in operation once you land.

If you are vaccinated and test positive, you will be asked to isolate in your accommodation for 5 days. Alternatively, you may be required to stay in a quarantine hotel, the cost of which will be covered by the Greek authorities.

Any other expenses you incur whilst away from home will not be reimbursed.

Unvaccinated

A handful of restrictions remain on where you can venture in Crete if you’ve yet to receive a vaccine, though far fewer than you might think… or have become accustomed to.

Be mindful that you may need to show proof of a negative rapid test taken 48 hours before visiting certain public places like shops and restaurants. We’re sure you’d agree that’s no real hardship given the last two years!

Day to Day and Public Spaces

It’s also worth remembering that masks are still mandatory in all indoor public spaces within Greece. Again, this is unlikely to detract from a great holiday!

As in the United Kingdom, restrictions in Crete and throughout Greece are ever changing. For that reason, we’d recommend checking the latest guidance in the days and weeks leading up to your holiday.

Right now, for example, restricted numbers are permitted entry to churches and religious ceremonies but there is every chance that ruling will be relaxed ahead of the summer season. We certainly hope so.

If in doubt, contact Crete Escapes. There’s also no harm in self-testing prior to any outing, just to be on the safe side.

Returning to the UK

As highlighted above, you do not need to use a Passenger Locator Form, take any covid tests, or quarantine when you return to the UK. This is due to Crete and Greece’s inclusion on the clear travel list. This makes no difference whether you are vaccinated or not.
